A little while back a designer I was working with www.thisismadeup.co.uk neatly pointed me towards a cool design tool for designing colour schemes that we could use in developing websites and designing new e-commerce solutions.

Well it took and while and has long been a case of "cobler's shoes", that is, although we are in business to develop and design websites, it seems impossible to find the time to build one for ourselves!

Getting to Internet Explorer Standalones to Work - Finally

After looking many times, and generally finding Microsoft particularly unhelpful... I have finally found someone that seems to have built a great set of Internet Explorer Standalones!

What does this mean?

Well, when developing web sites we need to do browser testing because different browsers sometimes render pages incorrectly (Firefox renders things correctly, and is highly recommended). However, nearly all the problems in this area exist with Windows Internet Explorer and particularly between versions 6, 7 and now 8. But when it comes to testing and checking Microsoft won't let you install more than one version on a PC - install 7 and it replaces 6 etc.! not helpful.

For a while we have used the Tredosoft Multile IEs solution which has been pretty good but there are a few minor issues with it that have led to me not fully trusting certain things. Today though I found an alternative that, on the face of it appears to do what it says on the tin!

If this is of interest try out Final Builds - Internet Explorer Collection - it even has the Web Developer Bar built in - great!

Well worth a try. Am interested to hear of any other web developers, designers and programmers have experience of it and if you've found any quirks when browser testing.

New Dedbooks booksite for Naval & Military Booksellers Marine & Cannon

This week saw the launch of another Dedbooks book selling Web site for Naval & Military Booksellers Marine & Cannon. The new site http://www.marinecannon.com has over 4000 specialist Naval and Military books.

Marine & Cannon specialize in Naval, Maritime, Military & Aviation Fine and Rare Antiquarian and Out-of-Print Books and Ephemera - the latter including original Manuscripts & Engravings.

IE8 and Backward Compatibility

So IE8 is here, and as much as we encourage our clients to get a proper browser and get Firefox, it seems we cannot ignore IE8! If you have got IE8 you may have noticed it comes with a button for "IE7 Compatibility Mode" which means it can switch back and render a Web site using the IE7 rendering engine rather than the IE8 engine - clearly Microsoft have made yet more changes to make life difficult for Web developers and generally break existing sites.

So has this just made more work for us to fix and tweak old sites?

Well here is a simple solution... by putting the following line:

<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" />

into the <head> section of your HTML in the site will automatically make IE8 render the site using the IE7 rendering engine - the result being you will not get any unexpected calls from clients who have *recently/boldly/foolishly [*delete as appropriate] upgraded to IE8!

Simple but effective!

It is the old issue of cobblers shoes... after nearly 4 years since Dedoko was born from Source ID we are finally getting round to building a new Web site and identity for ourselves. It is a good sign when you are constantly too busy to do this, but frankly it is time we made time! Here on our Blog we have applied a bit of new 'skin' and logo, so feel free to let us know what you think. We have also skinned out Twitter page. Our new look will hopefully be on the main Dedoko Web Development Web site very soon... better stop blogging about it and get on with it!
